About · London

I'm Ishmael. A designer who ships.

Ishmael McCalla, designer and founder of CoverTurn.
01The story

Seven years shipping. Two years running a studio.

London-born. I designed and built websites for small businesses for five years, then founded CoverTurn in 2024 to turn that work into a studio. Brand systems and full sites for clients who needed the standard of a senior team without the price tag of one.

Two years in, the studio runs on, and the work has stretched. I built Maximus Elite with a real client deadline in 48 hours. I shipped Check the Lease, a free AI lease reader, at the Replit 10 Year Hackathon. I'm building IndieFlow, an outbound CRM for solo founders, on Claude Code. And I designed Atlas, a voice AI concierge for luxury hospitality, end to end as a concept piece.

The thread through all of it: design and ship the whole thing. Brand, interface, production code, deploy. Same hands, same standard, end to end.

02How I work

Four principles I won't compromise on.

01
Brand decides trust before the product runs.
People judge the room in three seconds, before they read a word. The brand has to land (palette, type, voice, restraint) before the interface gets a chance to work. I design brand and product together, not in sequence.
02
Ship the real thing, not the Figma.
A handoff loses the design. I write the production code so the live thing matches the file. Motion, type weight, spacing, accessibility. All handled by the same person who drew it.
03
Constraints are the brief.
48 hours forced every Maximus decision to be load-bearing. 24 hours forced every Check the Lease scope cut. The best work I've shipped came from constraints I didn't get to negotiate.
04
Design for the room, not the system.
Atlas optimises for the guest feeling cared for. IndieFlow optimises for a solo founder feeling less alone. The system serves the room. Never the other way around.
03What I'm open to

Talking to teams now.

The next chapter is bringing the same hands inside a team. I'm in conversation with agencies, product companies, and founders about three shapes. The studio keeps running alongside whatever's a fit.

01

Embedded retainer

For an agency or studio that needs senior design and code under their brief. Sprint cadence, your clients, shipped under your name.

02

Founding designer

For an early-stage product company where one person owns brand, interface, and front-end code through to launch. Calmest at zero-to-one.

03

Design engineer

For a product team that wants design judgment and shipped code in the same hire. Motion, micro-interaction, production performance. All handled at design fidelity.
